The Ghosts of Our Fears: A Mindful Reflection on Fears That Never Came True

Woman with long dark hair stands between rocks on a beach, facing waves and a hazy blue sea under a calm sky.

I was going through a memento box recently and came across a note I wrote 10 years ago. It was titled, “What are your 10 biggest fears about life?” I had just moved to Florida, miles away from all of my friends and family, and was in my first year of graduate school at UCF.

As I sat there and read through my fears, I felt the reality for that version of me — the heaviness, the scarcity, the helplessness.

As I reflected through my present lens though, I was surprised at how many of those fears had not come true, or with time, the season had passed. Things that felt so big and real at the time, that aren’t even a concern today.

Time is fascinating like that. We live so many lives within the one. I love finding these opportunities for reflection. A way to gain insight and clarity on my growth. I’d like to share a few in hopes it helps you to reflect on the ghosts of your fears and decide to release them.

The first was that I would not find a boyfriend that was meant for me and another that I feared putting myself out there and getting rejected. I spent many days, nights, and years wishing I was in a happy, healthy relationship. I wanted it so badly, above all else.

I grew up surrounded by many sad, unfulfilling relationships and vowed I would rather be single for the rest of my life than to settle again. Many moons later, in 2024, I found a man who loves me better than anyone else ever has. We’ve been together for two years now.

Something else I noted was that most of my fears involved the people closest to me. I was afraid of the impact those relational wounds would have on me if they did or didn’t do something.

Some were dark, like fearing my brother was going to overdose and die. Next month he will have been free from his addiction for 10 years! Another was that my life would be impacted by a natural disaster, and yet I’ve experienced several hurricanes to date and persevered.

Other fears were lighter, like my sister not graduating from college. Yet she did last year AND was just accepted to law school!

I feared that I would be stuck in a job that I hated and that I would not earn enough money to support the lifestyle I wanted to live. Although I’m not living as lavish as I dream to, I have owned my own business for over 6 years now and am financially independent with no debt.

Growth has a way of changing not only our circumstances, but our perspective. 24-year-old me would be so relieved to see the life I live now. I freed myself from enmeshment, have autonomy over my choices, and have maintained many healthy, fulfilling relationships. It's a humbling reminder that many of the things that cause me stress today are a result of the very things I once hoped and worked for!

And maybe in 10 years, they will be whispers of the past that I’ve grown through.

Looking back reminded me that fear often tells us stories that time never confirms.

We spend so much time preparing for futures that never arrive. The fears you're carrying today may not disappear overnight. Some may come true and transform you in ways you don’t expect; others may not ever arise. I wonder what your future self would say if they could read the list of fears you're carrying today.

So take a moment to ask yourself: Which fears am I still carrying that no longer deserve the weight I've given them? You might be surprised by how much lighter life feels when you finally set them down.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn't certainty — it's realizing that we've become someone capable of navigating whatever comes next.
